“First Adventure” Girl’s Tunic Set

Linen underdress, overtunic, and belt for kids

Are you ready to take the whole family on an adventure? ArmStreet has released its flagship children’s collection, a line of items made specifically for kids with the same fantastic design principles as all our bestselling adult clothing. As parents ourselves, we know exactly how important it is that kids feel safe, comfortable and cool in everything that they’re wearing. With this collection, we’ve worked hard to apply the same attention to detail, high-quality fabrics, and our course stylish aesthetic, without encroaching on movement or quality. Everything has been tested by our kids and they absolutely love it all - in some cases, it was a real challenge to get everything back after the photoshoots.

This listing is for our complete girl’s outfit, though the pieces can also be purchased separately. This includes a long undertunic, a tunic dress, and a cute fabric belt to tie the outfit together.

The underdress for this collection is inspired by a lot of our popular women’s chemise but has been patterned to fit a child better. It comes down to the ankle, has long (but not fitted sleeves), and a rounded neckline with a small tie in the middle. It isn’t made to be billowy but also doesn’t fit tightly and has gussets under the arms which leave lots of room for swinging swords and other activities.

The overdress doesn’t have any particular historical inspiration because we wanted to be nice and generic to fit into any setting. The result is something stylish, undeniably medieval, but not specific in design. This dress has a wide scooping neckline, short sleeves with a split up to the shoulder, and comes down to the ankle at the same length as the underdress. It is embellished with beautiful trim to frame it along all of the hems, including the bottom of the dress, the sleeves (including the splits), and the neckline.

Sizes 98-128 of this dress also include eyelets and lacing at the left shoulder and sizes 134-152 include lacing at both shoulders to aid with taking the dress on and off, without the neckline being too wide and falling off the shoulders. The dress has a similar fit to the chemise: it is not voluminous and billowing but is also not fitted or meant to be tight.

The collection is tied together with a gorgeous fabric belt that allows your child to choose how tightly the garment fits around their waist. The base for the belt is contrasting linen, with a strip of matching trim running up the middle and cute little fringes on the end. The belt should be long enough to wrap around the waist twice and come to a finish with a knot. The color of the dress and the trim is up to you - this is a great time to think about your personal heraldry and figure out how your children can match your house colors!

All of the items in this set are made from 100% flax linen, which is an absolutely amazing fabric and a favorite of all of our customers. 100% natural, this gentle textile starts out a little bit stiff but softens quickly with body heat or a wash. It feels lovely against the skin and becomes very very soft, wicking away moisture and being perfect for all weather. We’ve worked very hard to apply high standards to all of the tailoring in this collection as well, meaning all of the seams are robust and well finished just like all of our other clothing.

Before trying on this costume, we recommend having a conversation with your child about how medieval clothing fits different from their modern wardrobe. When trying on medieval clothes, children will often find it uncomfortable or tight because it doesn’t stretch and is fitted in different places. A quick chat about how it’s going to feel, and how medieval clothing doesn’t have zippers or stretchy fabric will go a long way in preparing them to feel comfortable in their new medieval attire! We also recommend a slightly different strategy for putting tunics on: arms first, then head. This is because linen will not stretch in the same way that modern knits do, and if they don’t find the armholes before the head hole they might find themself stuck!

Pay attention to one important thing: most kids, especially when it comes to smaller ones, are used to wearing way softer clothing, which is usually made of extremely soft and stretch fabric. So there is a chance your kid won't be happy dealing with medieval clothes limitations and natural fabric early on. As we experimented on our own kids, statistically all of them get used to this after a while – normally when linen gets softer and shapes a tad on the owner's body. But please be very conscious about it in the beginning and make sure your kid is really comfortable with the medieval costume. We tried our best to make this clothing as comfortable and loose and flowing as possible, but natural fabric and ancient patterns have their disadvantages, so the final decision is on you: we can't guarantee that any kid will be comfortable wearing our medieval clothes.

Absolutely amazing tunic. Though our daughter was a bit short for even the shortest tunic, we were able to use the belt to hike up the dress and give her full mobility. She never once complained about it being itchy. Strong recommend, she made tons of people's hearts melt as she ran around the Renfaire.
