Authentic Medieval Casting from ArmStreet
Casting is possibly one of the most beautiful methods of jewelry creation ever. It creates interesting shapes and clean, crisp lines as well as three-dimensional objects not otherwise possible to create with other technologies. It can be observed as early as 3200 BC, and was used to create jewelry, weapons, ceremonial items, religious artifacts, household items and many other uses.
Casting was also very popular in the Dark Ages, being used to create beautiful, ornate brooches that Viking women often wore in pairs on their chests, button, beads, as well as components of weapons and other common items that fit into everyday life.

If you’re wondering how medieval casting was made….
Casting in the medieval world was a bit different to casting today, but at the same time is very similar! In our modern world, we have found ways to industrialize and mass-produce casting, taking much of the love and artistry out of it. Here at ArmStreet, we still produce casting in the traditional way, which uses wax, sand, and making many molds! Basically, an item must first be shaped from wax, then a mold is made from it (referred to as the lost-wax method, and then we can cast that shape in any material we wish. This allows for beautiful, handcrafted shapes and unparalleled quality.
We have a number of different types of Medieval casting for sale, including:
- Necklaces
- Brooches
- Buttons
- Belt buckles
- Complete belts
While some of our items are complete pieces, such as leather belts finished with cast buckles, other items are pieces for you to use yourself. We have beautiful decorative rivets as well as buckles and buttons that will help you put the final touches on items you might be making yourself.
Though many people talk about casting in the dark ages, you may be wondering more about Middles ages casting. The practice was still alive and well in the Late Middle Ages through to the Renaissance, where they started using techniques to cast pipes and other items for town building, as well as the usual brooches, jewelry, crowns, and other gorgeous adornments.
