Large Viking Shield
Leather-covered plywood shield, 35"
This shield has been designed as a part of our Viking's collection. It's large and exclusively decorated with brass etched accents. Great looking combat gear. It is rather heavy (9 kg), so it's a serious weapon for a strong man.
An adjustable thick leather strap is included to make this shield easier to carry.

How was the shield constructed? Was it done traditionally with with planks and the 2 on the back side with the center grip? Or a different way?
The shield is made of 1 layer of 10 mm thick plywood, the rim is protected with a layer of rubber. Also the shild is covered with a 4-6 mm thick leather
A beautiful shield with a tragic flaw - that mirrored boss has to go. Any way you can lose the larp boss & use a hammered one - the rest of the shield is nice albeit a bit "perfect" if you get my meaning - still usable except for the obviously machine spun & buffed boss - thanks
Non-buffed boss without any polishing will corrode. We are convinced that the metal details should to be buffed and polished, to extend the life of the product.
How long does the leather last in SCA combat? Has it been/could it be treated with something to add longevity to it?
In our experience, any shield comes into disrepair after six months of intensive trainings. The fact is that the shields were always consumable. You may polish the shield with wax or fat-liquor it to make the leather firmer or more elastic respectively, but this will increase the weight of the shield.
