“The Wayward Knight” Full Leg Harness

XIV-XV century transitional leg harness

Wayward implies that he’s cast out, unwanted, never to return home… though that’s not quite true. Maybe this lifestyle was a choice he made for himself, and maybe home to him is whatever he carries on his back and wherever he finds adventure next.

Our Wayward Knight Collection is an exciting new functional fighting kit, with inspiration taken from the best parts of the XIV-XV century. Well articulated, solidly built and creatively brilliant, this set truly combines the best parts of history with modern comfort to create a kit that will make you the envy of everyone else on the battlefield. This listing is for the full leg harness, included the cuisses, articulated knee and greaves. While the armor in the image has been finished with our amazing new hammered blackened effect, we can also make this leg harness out of plain mild steel or stainless steel. If you opt for these options, we can finish them in either a satin or mirror finish.

This is a late XIV century transitional leg harness, and it is beautiful! We have paid close attention to a variety of central European historical prototypes and crafted these legs as a true passion project, enjoying the process of taking our favorite aspects of historical finds and combining them into something great. One of the first things you’ll notice is that the harness is punctuated by a central ridge, which really makes them a transitional piece and brings them into the XV century. The cuisses cover most of the thigh and have a hinging piece to provide coverage to the back of your leg, and connect to a beautifully articulated knee. The main difference you’re going to find when comparing this to more faithful harnesses is that the fans are larger than the usual historical fans, to accommodate our SCA customers who wish for a little bit of extra knee protection from those wrap shots.

The most notable thing that makes this leg harness special is the incredibly unique greave, which makes better for modern medieval combat. It is notoriously difficult to create well-fitted greaves for remote customers, so this is our solution to that problem. The front of the greave is solid 1.5mm (16ga) steel, while the back of it is a thick leather that provides protection whilst sitting snuggly on your calf. It makes the greave much more adjustable than its full-wrap alternative.

It is difficult to look beyond the blackened nature of this armor. After much experimentation we are incredibly proud of the result and happy to share it with the world! The chemical blackening protects the structural integrity of the steel, allowing surface rust to develop without damaging it deeper. Because of this, it will take a bit of additional maintenance to keep this harness shiny compared to our rust-resistant stainless steel. This harness is truly completed by the hammered, blackened brass that trims the sides and creates a look that is opulent yet humble. Solid brass rivets hold the whole thing together, with quality leather straps and cast medieval brass buckles.

How do the legs stay together? Is there an ability to add a post from the shin to the knee plate to keep in from sliding down?

    ArmStreet Team:

Hello Patrick, there are arming points on the gambeson and armor legs are tied to them with a help of the strings. You may also tie them to your belt for example.
