Sugarloaf Helmet "The Wayward Knight"

Far from home, the Wayward Knight doesn’t really care what other people think of him. He lives by his sword and is quick to jump into battle, and would rather fight to the end than find himself tethered to a place. To him, home is what he carries with him.
This is one of the helmets that goes with our new “Wayward Knight” collection of blackened armor. We designed this fully functional armor kit with the intention of it being combat ready and fearsome, as well as beautiful and unique compared to our other suits of armor.
The sugarloaf helmet is a relative of the great helm. A lot of historians consider it to be a transition between the great helm and the XIV century bascinet. In this type of helmet, we begin to see a move from a flat topped helmet to a more refined, fitted piece of armor. A standard sugarloaf differs from a bascinet in that it is a closed helmet with no removable visor, but a domed crown, unlike the flat top of a greathelm.
This sugarloaf is padded and ready for combat. It comes with leather straps to secure it to your chin, and sit quite low down - almost to your shoulders. It has two generously sized eye slots that give a decent amount of vision while still being protective, and a number of holes and a cross shape on either cheek to allow for easy breathing. We have made this helmet from 2mm steel, with solid rivets and 1mm steel accents in the shape of a cross on the front.
The lustrous, blackened finish is achieved through chemical blackening. This is a new process we have been experimenting with, and we’re very proud of the result! It can only be achieved on mild steel, so do keep in mind that this helmet will take a little bit of extra maintenance compared to our rust resistant stainless steel you’ll find in a lot of our other helmets. The blackening does give it extra protection against deep, structural rust, though. We can also add a “snakeskin” finish and additional weathering if you’re looking to make your helmet look even more battle-worn. If you aren’t a fan of the blackened armor, keep in mind that we can always just make this helmet out of plain mild steel, or if you aren’t looking to get a helmet that requires maintenance, stainless steel is also an option. Both of these can be made with a mirror or satin polish - mirror polish is very shiny, and satin is more matte.

Needs a chin strap to hold the helm to the back of my head. Thrusts to the face push the helm into my nose. Other than that I absolutely love it.

A truly well made product. The finish is perfect and the weight and thickness of the 2.5mm mild steel makes you feel as if you could be hit by a tank.

How large are the eye slots? SCA regulations state they must be less than one inch!

Is it possible to get two buckles?

Could this be made without the cross?
Dear Risa, the cross cannot be removed completely, but it can be made in mild steel and blackened to look like the rest of the helmet (it will be hardly seen).
Is it possible to make this with perforated steel inside the helmet over the eyes to protect the eyes.

Can this be made with a chain aventail attached?

Is the fit of this helmet different than the visored sugarloaf? This one looks like it’s more contoured to the back of the head and overall thinner, is that the case?
Hi Alex! This helmet looks smaller because of the black color. The main difference is that this helmet comes without visor.
If you don't have a mail coif or a padded coif would this be able to be made to fit with out those two like with so padding in it?
Hi Nick! Yes, we can make it without padding at all. Please simply leave this request in the comment to your order. Kindly note that is is not safe to wear the helmet without any padding.
How long would this take to produce and could the brass accents be blackened as well

Can measurements be taken to comfortably wear by itself, yet also have the option of using an arming cap and/or a mail coif underneath?
Hi Dagna! We can make the helmet either with padding or without it at all. You may take the measurements over your mail coif and we will make the helmet accordingly.
Since it is not included, is the pictured torse available for separate purchase?
