“The Wayward Knight” Black Armor Kit

Full set of armour made of blackened steel

"Not all those who wander are lost"
- J. R. R. Tolkien

The Wayward Knight is surefooted, a knight of conviction who is unlikely to ever find themselves truly lost. Sure – they might be disgraced or outcast, and they may appear to wander… but their confidence will never waver and their faith will never sway, because they believe in the one true thing they can rely on: themselves. Combat savvy and ready to struggle to the bitter end, this is a knight with the experience of multiple lifetimes and a chip on their shoulder so large that no amount of armor will ever cover it. They have no lord, no belongings except what they carry on their back…. But isn’t life so much more free when you don’t owe anyone anything?

Our Wayward Knight set is the result of months of experimentation with new technology. It is the labour of love and has resulted in a truly fearsome suit of armor that combines our technological triumphs with our love of history. We set out with the intention to create a transitional suit of armor full of eclectic pieces that work together to create the image of a knight that is battle worn, experienced and always ready to fight. With the XIV century as our base, we moved into the XV century and explored some transitional aspects of the arm and leg harness to produce a finished product that is a pleasure to wear, well fitted and of course, incredibly attractive.

The blackened nature of the steel was created with a chemical blackening process. Unfortunately, this process can’t be done with stainless steel, so this suit is made completely with mild steel (with the exception of the brigandine interior). The blackening of the steel does give it a certain amount of protection, though – while it will visibly rust, the rust will sit on the surface and not penetrate the steel to affect the structural integrity. We have trimmed the blackened steel with stunning brass that truly brings out the color and makes the whole look unforgettable.

While we think that the black steel is breathtaking, we can still create this set in a number of different finishes, including mirror and satin polishes in mild or stainless steel. As stated above, though, blackened steel is only an option with mild steel. We have made the majority of this set from 1.5mm (16ga) steel, with the exception of smaller articulating parts, which are 1mm (18ga) steel.

Black Armor Kit includes:

This harness consists of a Visby style coat of plates, pauldrons, an arm harness, and a leg harness including greaves. The helmet is not included in the price of this set, but is available separately in a number of different styles – consider this an opportunity to customize your finished look!

Visby style coat of plates

The Visby style coat of plates is slightly different to the original 1361 find. It includes an additional back panel to increase the area covered for the sake of comfort and protection. The plates inside the coat of plates are 1.5mm thick (16ga) and made from stainless steel to ensure that it maintains structural integrity and won’t rust up from sweat and use.

Arm harness

The shoulder armor of this set is simple and connects well with the arm harness. They are pointed at your shoulders and include a rondel to protect your armpit area. They have a few short lames that articulate down to sit on top of the arm harness. This is the most beautiful arm harness we have crafted yet. The forearm is anatomically shaped and curves at the wrist to provide an attractive shape as well as extra comfort. The elbows are fully articulated and provide you with a decent range of movement while covering as much of your arm as possible.

Leg harness

The leg armor of this collection can be described as a transitional harness, and it is absolutely beautiful. Accented with brass and fully functional with large fans and well-articulated knees, you’ll get decent coverage while looking utterly fantastic. The greave of this set is a little bit different to our usual – instead of making a full-wrap greave, we have made it anatomical from the front and closed the back with leather for a better fit and extra comfort.

Though this set may appear beaten up and old, we have spared no expense in ensuring that this is a premium suit of armor. Created with all of the same expert craftsmanship of our usual creations, this kit is made from quality materials down to every detail, including cast buckles, brass rivets and quality leather straps.

Please note: helmets, gauntlets and other items shown in the pictures aren't included in the full set, but are available in our store.

  • Jaco Barnard 13 of January 2019:

Hi Jaco! Padded chausses provide better protection but armor can be used with hosen too. Any gambeson you like in our store will work, except for the Aisian type long gambeson

  • James 14 of October 2022:

The armor looks incredible and fits perfectly. The weight is distributed evenly across the legs which makes it easy to wear for longer periods of time. The arms can be a little tricky to get on the first time however there was no problem afterwards. I would definitely recommend wearing padding around the ankles and wrists in order to avoid any chafing in those areas. Other than that, the armor offers excellent mobility and fits together nicely.

  • Nic 26 of August 2022:

The kit looks excellent and provides decent protection. It required only a little modification when it arrived (arm guards too long - ended up biting into my hands. Thighs were exposed enough to pinch together, threatening to draw blood if the legs moved together and had to be rolled), and it feels light enough to move in easily. Be aware that the rondels on the pauldrons hang from loose leather and, if you raise your arms up to a high Tag, they can slip under the arms of the breastplate and risk driving into the flesh. Also note that the knee and calf metal will rub against each other and rub off the blackening effect of the armour, so if you're buying it to be an awesome looking black knight, be prepared to buy some blue-ing solution to repair the glaring damage at home.
