Bliaut Dress Outfit “Sea Born”

Woolen overdress for women

This wonderful coat is the centerpiece of our “Sea Born” collection - a selection of items for those who dream of dancing through the waves. The whole collection is full of beautiful accessories and clothing that are inspired by the sea, from the colors of the sea creatures to the graceful shapes of the ocean. We imagine you wearing “Sea Born” as you stroll along the cliffs to the sound of crashing waves, or enjoying a peaceful sunrise on the misty beach at dawn.

This garment is called a Bliaut, which is a common overgarment found in Western Europe in the early medieval period. They were often the last layer of clothes to be put on after a chemise and underdress, used to add a layer of warmth. These garments were often floor-length, fitted around the shoulders and upper arm with longer, voluminous sleeves.

Our bliaut is designed with consideration of the historical garment, but altered to make sure it fits the modern figure with comfort. Lacing has been added at the sides to make it easier to put on and take off, as well as keep the beautiful fitted fit across the bust and waist. Much like the historical versions, it is fitted across the shoulders and flares out below the elbow to give you beautiful bell sleeves. You can see from the pictures all of the immaculate patterning around the bust, sleeves, and shoulders to give it such a perfect shape. The bliaut comes down to your mid-calf, which leaves room for you to walk.

This garment is crafted from premium textiles, including a beautiful woolen fabric that is warm but still drapes beautifully. Wool is the perfect choice for an overgarment because it provides a decent amount of warmth, and avoids being too itchy because it has been lined with a contrasting satin. Every stitch has been carefully applied and every seam finished by our expert seamstresses who take great pride in crafting quality garments.

The trim for this piece is inspired by the shapes of the waves and beautiful nautilus shells. There are two widths of trim, a thinner trim around the neck and sleeves, and a slightly thicker around the bottom. This is an ArmStreet exclusive trim, designed by our team of artists specifically for this collection. The shapes are reminiscent of patterns you find along the borders of western European medieval manuscripts.

Please note that while this listing is for the bliaut, there is also a belt available for purchase separately.

  • Kate 18 of July 2023:

Is the bliaut just the blue part, or is the orange under layer (like in the pictures) included with it?

    ArmStreet Team:

It is just the blue part. The dress can be purchased separately.

  • Erika 03 of September 2022:

Is the aquamarine wool color option the one pictured? The inside of the sleeves looks that color, but the outside looks like a darker blue?

    ArmStreet Team:

Hello, yes it is indeed aquamarine wool color the one pictures of the listing.

Best costume I've ever owned! Beautiful and high quality materials, superb finish and very unique. Picture isn't great but shows most of the set

  • Amaryllis 09 of February 2022:

A gorgeous piece of clothing that keeps me warm and will continue to do so. The shape and length of the sleeves help protect hands from the cold and shelter a bag from the bad weather. The color (orange) is gorgeous and goes well with the color of the lining. Excellent choice of color for the topstitching on the sleeve bell. The bliaud is well trimmed and beautifully crafted. The lacing on the sides probably requires a little practice or assistance. Fortunately, the dress is wide enough that I don't have to try it on myself.

  • Melissa Mignini 07 of February 2022:

The dress was very well made, the only hitch was the time it took to receive my purchase, which made my purchase arrive too late for my daughter's birthday.

  • Verena Rupp 22 of October 2021:

The Bliaut is beautiful and super warm - I've already worn it with my tunic, underdress and earrings. The sea born collection is simply gorgeous. However, I do have one complaint about the Bliaut - every time I put it on and take it off, the cord slips out of the eyelets. You can thread it back in yourself, but it's very awkward.

I want to cry...all of this is too pretty, but I'm never going to be able to get them because of their price.
