“First Adventure” Children's Cloak
Cotton cloak with a hood for kids
Is your youngster ready to start their own journey, go on a quest and fight a dragon? Or maybe they just really want to come to the Renaissance Fair or SCA event with you next year. Regardless, “First Adventure” has you covered. Our flagship collection of children's clothing, this line of garments has the same high-quality finishing, premium fabrics and attention to detail that you’ll find in our adult clothing, but perfectly designed to fit the bodies of your most cherished family members.
The cloak is one of the most classic pieces of medieval clothing. They feature prominently both in history and in fantasy costuming, mostly because they’re very comfortable and incredibly practical! A cape is more than just a cool looking layer that billows behind you when you walk, it’s also a shade from the sun, protection from the rain and extra resistance from the wind. Everyone who has worn a cape before knows that feeling of loss that you get when you suddenly find yourself not wearing one anymore, because they’re just so much fun to walk around in! Our kids loved this particular cloak so much that we had trouble getting them back after the photoshoot - it was as if they had cast some magical spell over them that turned them into heroes, so don’t be surprised if your child wants to wear it to school as well!
This cloak made to be 3/4 width, which means it is constructed from 3/4 of a complete circle. This is wide enough to wrap yourself in, though not quite as voluminous as a full circle cloak. After lots of testing, we found that this was the perfect amount of fabric and coverage without being too bulky. The cloak drapes to the ground and includes a hood at the top that will cover your head. In order to make this cloak easy to put on and take off, we have a tie at the front which is much safer to deal with than a sharp cloak pin. The majority of the cape is made from four main pieces, which have been expertly finished to have no exposed overlocking or untidy seams. We chose to make this cape from cotton that has a good weight to it, meaning it will be nice and strong.

Pay attention to one important thing: most kids, especially when it comes to smaller ones, are used to wearing way softer clothing, which is usually made of extremely soft and stretch fabric. So there is a chance your kid won't be happy dealing with medieval clothes limitations and natural fabric early on. As we experimented on our own kids, statistically all of them get used to this after a while – normally when linen gets softer and shapes a tad on the owner's body. But please be very conscious about it in the beginning and make sure your kid is really comfortable with the medieval costume. We tried our best to make this clothing as comfortable and loose and flowing as possible, but natural fabric and ancient patterns have their disadvantages, so the final decision is on you: we can't guarantee that any kid will be comfortable wearing our medieval clothes.
