“First Adventure” Children’s Hood

Designed by parents and tested out by our children, everything in this collection is specifically patterned to have the best fit possible on a child - no “miniature adult clothes” here! We’ve applied the same design principals and high-quality textiles to this line of items as we do to our adult clothing, so this whole collection consists of high-quality items that will last for years to come.

We love hoods! They are such an easy way to add an extra layer to a costume and really bring it up a level aesthetically. Medieval people obviously agreed, given that these were in fashion for well over a thousand years. That’s not the only reason they loved them, though: they’re also incredibly practical. If you’re just wearing it with the hood part down, it’s basically a nice little scarf that keeps your neck and shoulders warm. Put the hood up, and you have a shade from the sun, protection from the rain, and a shield from the wind! They really are an all-weather garment that’s great for basically any climate. This article of clothing was so popular that you even still see people wearing them today - though they’ve been merged with a tunic to make the modern favorite “hoodie”. Our little hood drapes over the shoulders and across the chest in a gentle arc and includes a fairly voluminous hood that’s easy to hide in, with a cute point at the end. To put on the hood, you simply need to pull it over your head - there’s no lacing, buttons, or anything else to get caught in your hair.

The wool we use for the outer of this garment is the same high-quality fabric that we use on all of our adulthoods. It has a nice weave to it and isn’t scratchy or itchy, though we’ve also added a linen lining just in case as well. The 100% flax linen lining feels wonderful next to your skin, and even though it starts a little bit stiff, it does soften up quite well with time. Wool is a perfect outer fabric because it is naturally a little bit water repellant. You’ll find that in light rain the moisture will just bead and roll off of it, unlike other textiles such as cotton that will more freely absorb water and become heavy. Our hood is very well sewn using all of our finest finishing techniques, and is unadorned and ready to be customized by you or worn plain. Pay attention to one important thing: most kids, especially when it comes to smaller ones, are used to wearing way softer clothing, which is usually made of extremely soft and stretch fabric. So there is a chance your kid won't be happy dealing with medieval clothes limitations and natural fabric early on. As we experimented on our own kids, statistically all of them get used to this after a while – normally when linen gets softer and shapes a tad on the owner's body. But please be very conscious about it in the beginning and make sure your kid is really comfortable with the medieval costume. We tried our best to make this clothing as comfortable and loose and flowing as possible, but natural fabric and ancient patterns have their disadvantages, so the final decision is on you: we can't guarantee that any kid will be comfortable wearing our medieval clothes.
