“Cassius” Roman Angusticlavia Tunica

Ancient Linen Tunic

Salve, omnes! Our “Cassius” collection reflects the average military Roman - he is bold, strong, opinionated yet dutiful, happy to do what needs to be done for the good for Rome. The Romans are a magnificent group to research. Fastidious record keeping and well preserved knowledge mean that finding information and reference is far easier than it is for significantly more recent eras, despite the Romans being millennia before! This leaves us with a huge amount of choice regarding what kind of garments and armor we decide to produce, we are really spoiled for choice! This garment, an Angusticlavia, is a perfect base layer under your armor or more formal clothing.

When the average person thinks of Roman clothing, they usually think of the Toga. In reality, though, the toga was not incredibly common - it was made out of many meters of wool fabric, and worn on formal occasions. In fact, there was so much fabric involved that they were actually quite cumbersome, and not something that one wished to wear on an average day. A much more common garment to see was the simple roman tunica - a comfortable, versatile piece that could fit many different body types and be very flattering! The Angusticlavia is a type of tunica, often worn by high ranking military men. Traditionally, it would have been made of very fine wool. The vertical stripes down the front denote the rank or station of the individual wearing it. These stripes are referred to as “Clavi”, and basically acted as your passport - they would quickly signal to those around you your place in society.

Our ArmStreet Angusticlavia is made from 100% flax linen - we imagine it to be the perfect thing to wear on a hot campaign or during a long festival. The breeze really flows through this fabric, which is great during the summer. In cooler weather, it will act as a great base layer because linen is also a good natural insulator. The tunic is knee length and is very well finished. The whole tunic is neatly sewn, including the Clavi stripes - we feel they are truly a triumph of our seamstresses! The whole tunic feels very luxurious and will last you many campaigns!

If you want to change the colour or the width of the clavus, feel free to contact us.

This tunic can be worn a ton of different ways! Because it is basically a glorious drape of fabric, you can choose how you wear it with the help of your belt. We recommend experimenting and trying to find the way that best suits you.
