Roman Coolus Helmet “Cassius”
Stainless steel and brass roman helm
Most soldiers had their doubts about the Emperor. It’s not easy to meet a tyrant and not feel a tingle of the rebellion crawling up your spin, invading every waking thought. Cassius was strong and trustworthy, one of the most disciplined Centurions they had trained in decades. In retrospect, they realized that from the first day he joined them - and looked the Emperor in the eye - he was probably already plotting the assassination.
“Cassius” is our flagship collection of ancient armor. Being our first foray into this time period, we decided to work from one of our favorite eras - the Roman Principate Empire. The aspect of this time that inspires us the most is their obsessive attention to detail and ability to record and document items as well as military strategy. It made it much easier for us to research and plan this collection because the source material was so well preserved and the documentation rich! In creating this collection, we decided to take our favorite aspects of Roman armor and elaborate on them with our design knowledge and manufacturing technologies. The result is a collection of armor that is undeniably Roman in design and inspiration but robustly constructed from modern materials that make it easier to wear and more practical.
This helmet has been inspired by history, but we have taken many creative liberties. It is something that we feel could have existed, but we can’t find proof! The form of this helmet is based on a mix between an Imperial Gallic Helmet and a Coolus - a soldiers helmet that was standard issue in the first century AD. The main difference in design is that a Coolus would have a slightly different neckpiece at the back - historically it would have been shorter. As well as this, a historical Coolus also would not have the ear holes that we chose to add (for the sake of practicality). The drastic difference, though, is that a historical Coolus was actually made entirely of bronze, which looked magnificent but unfortunately is not as practical in modern times. This is why we chose to forge it from stainless steel - stainless is structurally strong, much cheaper than bronze, but still, a premium material that looks fantastic. We hope that you enjoy and appreciate all of these choices we have made to create this beautiful piece of headwear!
We are proud to have used the highest quality materials possible in creating this helmet. We have forged this piece from 2mm stainless steel, with 3mm stainless steel peak at the forehead. Stainless steel is an amazing material because it is very resilient and rust-resistant, so you won’t have to worry about your sweat building up inside, causing the helmet to rust out and lose structural integrity. 1mm brass has been used for the decorative accent on the cheek plates as well as the bordering. The helmet has been assembled using solid rivets, and all accents have also been robustly attached with rivets. This piece comes pre-padded (including the cheek plates!), and can be closed with a piece of string or thonging at the bottom of the cheek plates.

When ordering this, are we able to opt out of getting the cheek Guard padding? But keep the main head part padded?
