“Hussar” Helmet

Stainless Steel and Brass

It’s almost impossible not to love the Hussars. A fascinating part of Eastern European history, these charming horsemen were known for their style, intense fighting, and brutal battlefield techniques. They are a great example of people who not only looked fantastic with their flamboyant armor (and sometimes, giant wings!) but also had the skill and martial prowess to back it up. We enjoy researching and showcasing Eastern European history, so we are thrilled to shine a light on the Polish Hussars!

The driving design concept for this set of armor was functionality. We wanted it to be flexible and comfortable, but still offer a decent amount of protection to the wearer. A lot of it was also designed with cavalry in mind. Once we figured out how to make everything perfectly functional, we moved onto the aesthetics of it, creating a look that is opulent and eye-catching.

The main materials you will find on this helmet are stainless steel and brass. Stainless steel is a great base material, as it is very strong and can really take a beating in combat. On top of that, it is also very rust-resistant, meaning it holds up well to daily use and doesn’t require as much maintenance as mild steel. Solid brass rivets, as well as 1mm thick brass accents, are used throughout because they create a lovely contrast with the stainless steel and really add to that luxurious aesthetic.

The top part of the helmet is 2mm stainless steel to protect your head in the most vital places. It comes down to an amazing peak, which is 1.5mm thick. The decorative wings on the side of the helmet also share this thickness and have fantastic laser cut shapes cut into the side of them. Cheek plates on the side come down to your cheeks and cover the side of your face. This helmet contains no visor - though we do have an SCA version that does have one if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for. The back of your neck is well protected by an articulated “lobster tail” type back end of the helmet, which includes sliding rivets to ensure it is comfortable and doesn’t inhibit movement too much.

All of the decorative aspects of this helmet have been inspired by Eastern European art. Fantastic brass edges can be seen above the peak, on the ear flaps, as well as other ornate shapes and washers on the top of the helmet. These accents have been blackened and etched to imitate the look of engraving. Light fluting has been used on the helmet which gives it a great texture, and really makes it reflect light in an interesting way.

This helmet comes pre-padded and ready for battle, and include a chin strap to secure it.
