Linen Chausses “The Kingmaker”

Leg padding with leather arming points

If you are sick of the weight of a leg harness and need a break from metal armor, or simply wish to find some variety of protection that still allows you to run unencumbered, padded chausses are the perfect option. They can be worn on their own as light armor, or go excellently under armor to protect you from any points where the metal might rub. The thin padding also allows for a bit of extra impact protection in addition to your armor.

Comfort was the most important factor in making these chausses. They are made of two layers of 100% flax linen, with a thin layer of natural batting inside to allow for a bit of padding. The flax linen comes in beautiful bright colors and softens up to be comfortable next to your skin, as well as allowing for a great deal of breathability that will keep you cool in the heat of battle. To further allow for comfort, a round panel of fabric has been taken out behind the knee to prevent the material from bunching and causing pain or difficulty moving.

These chausses are anatomically shaped to fit your body like a glove. They have no stirrup under the foot as many other chausses often do, but instead finish at the base of the foot, with the sides dipping down to protect your ankle a little bit as well. This means that they offer maximum coverage as well as being very comfortable. To ensure they are tight to the calf, they have lacing at the back to give you the closest possible fit, as well as durable metal eyelets.

You wear these chausses as you would any other pair of split hose – with one on each leg. They are in the style of XIV century style pants, which of course have no codpiece like later style leg coverings, and instead can be pointed at the top to braies or an arming belt to keep them from falling down. Leather arming points have been sewn to each hip to give you the ability to attach your leg armor if you so choose.

The edges of these chausses are expertly finished with bias binding, so you can fight knowing that they are solidly constructed and aren’t going to fall apart on you. There are two choices of color patterns, and it’s up to you if you choose to go for something basic or something a little bit brighter. The first option is, of course, a singular color, and the other option is to have a second color on the inside, which will also make an appearance on the bias binding for a pop of contrast.

Hi Jasper, those chausses were made specially for the photo shoot once only, but they are very similar to the Medieval Chausses that we have available for purchase.

Its pretty good so far Fits well to my Legs although this leave me in a bit of a pickle, how do you tie around your leg to put on the greaves without pinching my chausses ? and how thick is the chausses?

    ArmStreet Team:

Hello, they are about 0.5 cm thick. The greaves usually attached to the upper leg otherwise you can sew arming points on the chausses or send the request to us during the purchase.

  • Guest 20 of August 2022:

Perfect fit. The cutouts behind the knee also provide easy flexibility you don't find in other styles.

  • Adam 23 of February 2022:

Fantastic chausses! I ordered the custom fitted ones in green and brown and they fit my legs perfectly. They sit tight enough to secure and not slide around, but not too tight for comfort or mobility. Even though I use the King's Guard leg armour instead of the kingmaker armour, the arming points are in the exact right spots. The linen breathes very well so it doesn't get hot/warm. They are thin enough to be worn under armour but still provide padding and comfort, which is the perfect amount of padding. I strongly recommend these!

  • Daniel 18 of October 2021:

Very sturdy. Enough padding to make a difference, but light enough to allow for mobility as if you weren't wearing them. The cut-outs at the back of the kneecaps are a genius design choice. No complaints.

    Armstreet team:

    Thank you :)

  • Jon 25 of May 2021:

    1. Very well tailored to my measurements, a perfect fit under my armor. 2. Excellent sewing. 3. Lightweight and breathable. 4. Conveniently placed belt loops and arming points; supports my cuisses very well. Definitely recommended.

  • warriorby4 15 of May 2019:

My review of the The Kingmaker Linen Chausses(Black and Black): Well made. I am 5'10" 205lbs and I intentionally oversized with an XL. As expected they are a tad too large. I definitely recommend a L for anyone near my measurements who wants a normal fit. The material is a bit thinner than preferred, but that should add some breathability. It is warm as expected. The stitching is all well done and mine came with round black leather string for the calve portions. The string seemed just the right length to fit a wide range of calf sizes. The area that you thread the belt through seems pretty durable and well constructed. The material is very flexible.
