Medieval Rus Leg Armor

Greaves armor with knee cops, 12-14th cc.

These greaves are based on authentic XII-XIV century design from Dmitrovka grave in the Kuban (Southern Russia). Construction of these greaves is very unusual. Greaves are made of two parts - greave itself and knee cop united with the main plate by chain mail segment. The main plate has additional plate segment at the outer side for extra calf side protection.

General shape and armor style comes from historical sources and etched patterns are based on same period motifs we've found on jewelry and other armour pieces decorations.

These greaves are part of our Rus medieval armor kit so please check our other items from this collection.

If you're interested in full leg armor please check our Leg Armor category.

Important note about measurements: please take into account that we need your measurements in gambeson, choses or other under armour gear you are planning to use with this armor. The only exception is when you are ordering both armour and padding from our company — in this case, you can send us your body measurements. For sabatons please send your footwear actual measurements.

Is it possible to etch these in the celtic pattern matching your Medieval Vambraces with Celtic Etching?

    ArmStreet team:

Sorry, to date these greaves cannot be made with Celtic etching.

  • marcus 01 of May 2015:

Is there any way to replace the knee cops on these greaves with something in similar style to the Prince of the East style ones? But with the Rus etching? I like the greater knee protection afforded by the other style, but like the etching on this set.

    ArmStreet team:

The shape of the knee cops cannot be changed, sorry.

Absolutely beautiful, and a nice alternative to standard European medieval designs. Complemented by the matching bazubands, it makes one feel like a warlord (or lady) of means and substance. It's tough enough to take a hit, even from steel weapons, and can be easily tapped back out if dented. I wear the bazubands over a bambakion (Byzantine gambeson) and the greaves over leather riding boots in Cataphract style. I recommend similar under-layers if you wear them for anything rougher than a LARP foam weapon to absorb the impact of blows. If you follow ArmStreet's sizing guide they'll fit nicely. Just be sure to account for your under-layers when you order. I did and was very pleased with the fit. In my case I wanted an extra hole on the arms (looser) and legs (tighter). The straps had enough length to accommodate both, which I took care of myself with careful application of a leather punch. I also wanted to put in a word for ArmStreet customer service. Their communication was prompt, courteous and helpful, and they went out of their way to ensure I was pleased with their work. I'm leaving an identical review on the bazubands, as I see them as a set. Well worth the price for very fine craftsmanship and artistry!
