Gothic Knight Gorget
Neck protection with roped edge and articulation
On the quest for protection that is both beautiful and functional, you are always going to come across medieval gothic armor. Now found in museums and on display in all corners of the world, this style of armor was originally crafted in the XV century. If you’re trying to figure out what makes this armor so recognizable and unique, look to the folded steel accents - referred to as fluting - and the stunning, streamlined shapes. Of course, some Gothic armor is fancier than others, but it is all revered for its flawless articulation and functional, anatomically shaped pieces, such as the shaped waist.
When it comes to Gothic armor, this is far from our first attempt. We fell in love with it many years ago, and since then we have been working to refine our design to make it even more comfortable and stunning. After a great deal of research and experimentation, our master blacksmith has finally created our third official version of Gothic armor, which he is excited to share!
There are three main parts of this gorget: a central panel which protects your chest, and two connecting lames that stack on top of each other to create a “collar” (the back of the gorget has the same construction). The front panel comes down to create an attractive shape on your chest, and the rear covers a decent part of your back with a squarer shape. Everything is connected with our usual method of articulation, which includes leather straps and solid rivets to make sure everything is well attached but still flexible. On one side of the gorget you will find a hinge and on the other a push-pin mechanism which allows you to easily take it on and off. This mechanism is not strictly historical, but it is aesthetically unobtrusive and easy to use.
The top of the gorget includes the signature roping we have put on this set. The roping is made from stainless steel wire and is beautiful and decorative, but also serves another purpose: it is strong and structural and actually reinforces the whole piece as well. Overall, this gorget is well fitted and allows for comfortable movement while also making sure your neck is well protected.
As with the whole Gothic set, this gorget is crafted from premium materials that are sure to stand the test of time. 1.5mm stainless steel is used throughout, which is an excellent material due to its ability to resist rust. It is also very strong and is easy to take care of, remaining shiny and lustrous most of its life. We use high-quality leather on all articulation and strapping, and solid brass rivets that have been peened over to ensure a strong construction. We also have two surface finishes for you to choose from: mirror and satin. The mirror finish is what you would expect with such a name: it is incredibly shiny, and perfect for a valiant knight. Satin is a little bit more subdued for those who don’t wish to see their own reflection in their armor. We can also make this gorget in mild steel, though we do HIGHLY recommend stainless steel, especially for something so close to your chest and likely to get sweaty. Mild steel degrades much quicker than stainless steel and does not have the same resistance to moisture.
