Medieval Coif Cap
Fine linen coif hat
A basic early coif that caters to any medieval character. This is a pure essential that will complete your underwear set and look authentic in many situations. Wear it at home as a night-cap, wear it under your hat to extend its service life, under your helmet or chain mail as an arming cap. It’s a good idea to get several coifs at once to make sure you always have a fresh new one to change into!
This single seam coif is based on miniatures from the famous Crusader or Morgan Bible - a handwritten scripture from the mid13th century. Sticking to the primary source but aiming to preserve usability and functionality, we've tried on a lot of mock-ups, and this one was approved unanimously. Following the depictions of medieval men wearing coifs with their curls peeking out here and there, we’ve made it close-fitting but not too deep.
The only possible fabric for such a universal cap is undyed natural flax linen. The perfect simplicity of the pattern is complimented by excellent finishing: the two parts are connected with neat seams, no overlock stitch or sticking out threads. The edges are covered with bias binding 0.5 cm wide. It features two strings to tie under the chin or to leave untied for a relaxed look. Available in two sizes.

This is such an essential addition to a medieval outfit-- I've worn mine under a padded helmet, under a sun hat, under a bycocket, etc etc. The linen is so comfortable to wear and only gets better with age. The shape is not perfect for my head but underneath other headwear it's close enough to work.
