Padded stitched coif cale

Quilted padded medieval hat

The English "coif", or German "Bundhaube", or French "cale", also known in the world of historical reenactment and medieval recreation simply as "coif", is one of the easily recognizable, funny-looking, and very practical pieces of Medieval and Renaissance costume. The simple version of the coif was primarily used as an under-headwear gear, as an in-house hat, or as an extra layer between the nicely-looking, and probably expensive "real" outdoor hat.

This coif, however, is a little bit of a different animal. While the shape is the same, it can surely be used both as an extra under-hat or as a stand-alone informal headwear, the one you wear just for added comfort. However, this coif is nicely quilted and padded, making it a functional piece of gear you can wear under your helmet (or maybe a fencing mask) as a thin yet valuable layer of protection. It features both the linen that absorbs sweat and the padding that improves the shock absorption.

As people who love authentic costuming, especially those aspects that differ from our everyday attire, we didn't miss the opportunity to create something historical, yet slightly fancier than what you usually see, and functional at the same time. The snail stitching makes it special, so you and your character will be unique while staying within the boundaries of style.
