Medieval Kirtle Dress

Traditional XVI dress with corset bodice

Historically, a kirtle is a traditional outfit worn by women in the Middle Ages. Normally, it was typically worn over a chemise with overdress worn over it.

We've added touch of elegance to the classic kirtle dress. This is a late version of the kirtle with severing wide cross-cut skirt that provides beautiful bell-shaped silhouette and suits any type of women stature. Dress also has corset bodice that shapes dainty waistline and high bust. The low square neckline emphasizes wearer's charms.

In our version fastener is relocated to the back to avoid its occurrence through the fabric of the surcoat but at the same time allowing draw tight the waistline (which is impossible with the help of double side lacing).

We also made a bit more delicate sleeves comparing to the original dress at the painting. And finished them with the decorative yet functional fastening with the help of tiny metal buttons. The contrast fabric of the chemise seen in splits between the buttons provides dress with more detailed and festive look. Balloon sleeve top is attached to the arm-hole with three laces which allow adjustment of the level of sleeve top fixation.

This dress is a part of our Traditional Central Europe Costume.

Please note, that matching chemise is not included, but available in the store.

My blue kirtle dress arrived yesterday and I absolutely love it!! The size chart seemed odd so I was worried that it would be too small but it fits perfectly and is really well made. A very versatile dress, can be worn on its own (with a chemise) or layered; good for summer and fall faires because of the removable sleeves. Thanks so much for the great buy!

  • Kira 11 of June 2019:

My kirtle in midnight flax linen arrived today. It is well constructed and fits perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.

  • Kira 14 of May 2019:

Are the seams finished with an oversew stitch (eg Serger)?

    ArmStreet Team:

Hi Kira, yes, the seams on this particular dress are finished with an oversew stitch.

  • Maggie 29 of March 2019:

Hi! I'm wondering what the shoulder to waist length is on the front and back of a size 0. I'm trying to figure out if I need to go custom or if a standard size will work. Thank you!

    ArmStreet Team:

Hi Maggie, pre-made dress fits the full height of 5' 6" (168 cm). If the full height is smaller or bigger, the dress won't fit, unfortunately. Total dress length is 148 cm.

  • Anna 27 of January 2019:

Hi! Can this beautiful piece be made with steel bones yet?

    ArmStreet Team:

Dear Anna, we use plastic bones only for our corsets, sorry.

  • Dianna 19 of January 2019:

Hi. I have a really large bust (30G) and I plan to order this in a custom fit. I was wondering if this kirtle will provide effective support for me w/out a bra?

    ArmStreet Team:

Hi Dianna! This is a corset dress. Corset has plenty of plastic bones in it so it provides good support and can be worn without bra.

  • Fionna 09 of October 2018:

Hi there, sorry this may be a bit of an odd question but since the kirtle features a corset bodice, should/do I need to wear a bra underneath it? Or does it function in the same way as the Renaissance corset? I mainly ask as I'm unsure if the chest measurement should be with or without a bra. Thank you!

    ArmStreet Team:

Hi Fionna, you may wear it with or without bra. This corset is not as tight as Renaissance corset, it does not fit so tight.

  • Sumaiya 27 of November 2017:

  • Kiera 15 of June 2017:

Hi, I'm going to custome order a dress because its on sale now, but shall soon be loosing a few inches. How much can this does be tightened/loosened. Should I over or under estimate?

    ArmStreet Team:

Hi Kiera, this dress is made according to the precise measurements. Unfortunately, it is not possible to loosen or tighten the corset dress.

  • Suzanne Shelp 30 of November 2016:

Hello, I was planning on ordering the size 8 stock dress in the Kirtle dress and was curious about the length of the bodice from shoulder to waist and/or top of the back to the waist. Thanks

    ArmStreet team:

The length from shoulder to waist for size 8 is:
    - Front length ~19 in (47.5-48 cm);
    - Back length ~ 16.5 in (42 cm).

  • Marjorie 26 of November 2016:

Could a farthimgale be worn with this dress?

    ArmStreet team:

The dress is not intended to be worn with a farthingale. The dress was inspired by a painting by Anton Woensam von Worms and is related to 16 century while farthingales became popular later.
Still, you are always welcome to experiment, it is not impossible that you will find your own excellent look. :)

  • Ingrid 22 of June 2016:

What are the possible colors for the kirtle? Is it only the red? Also, would any other color besides the red shown here cost extra? Thanks!

    ArmStreet team:

It's available in different colors in custom size (made to order) - simply switch to the Custom size tab in the description of the item to check all available colors.

  • Gen 03 of April 2016:

Hi, just wondering if you think that the Medieval Linen Chemise "Archeress" would suit this dress when the sleeves are not attached? Thanks in advance :)

    ArmStreet Team:

Hi Gen, yes it can be used with the Kirtle Dress. However, kindly note that neckline on the chemise is rounded.

  • Anna Haas 24 of March 2016:

  • Bella 27 of November 2015:

I am wondering if this dress can be made with steel bones instead of plastic?

    ArmStreet team:

We don't yet produce corsets with the steel bones, sorry.

  • Perseida 17 of November 2015:

Hello! What a gorgeous dress! Which fixed size would you suggest for a 89-90cm chest and a 80cm waist? Will size 4 be too wide around the chest or could be snugged with the lacing at the back? Thanks!

    ArmStreet team:

Thank you! Size 4 dress can be tightened with the lacing at the chest. To get the best fit, we recommend ordering this dress in custom size, it will be made in accordance to your measurements.

  • Charlotta 18 of October 2015:

Hi Armstreet, Is it possible to wear this corset dress under your "lady of the lake" gown or would the shoulder straps peep out at the neck line?

    ArmStreet team:

This dress is not intended to be worn under the "Lady of the Lake" dress, it can be worn under the Medieval Short-sleeved Dress XVI Century only.

  • Stefanie Cunningham 04 of October 2015:

Would I be able to tighten the corset bodice lacing myself when I put the dress on, or would I need a friend's help? Thank you

    ArmStreet team:

To tighten the corset mightily you may need outside help.

  • avalyen 23 of March 2015:

hello i have this in black and will be getting this in midnight blue flax.. stunning i like to know the lost princess gloves in blue will that go with it as well?

    ArmStreet team:

Of course the dress may be supplemented by the “Lost Princess” mitts, but please note that the hand warmers are made in more simple, ethnic style.

  • Ana 01 of March 2015:
