It’s easy to forget the importance of shoes to a costume - for a lot of people, they’re an afterthought. It’s a silly image: imagine gearing up completely in your Viking costume, chainmail and all… with a pair of modern white runners. So why do people tend to overlook shoes with a costume? We’ll tell you why: because medieval shoes are uncomfortable, leaving you with having to make a choice between comfortable modern shoes or cool looking medieval shoes. Well, we have a solution for you, which means you don’t have to choose!

These shoes are constructed with a combination of medieval and modern shoemaking techniques. Modern shoe lasts have been used, which is what makes these so comfortable. This leads to a better fit around your foot than you would get from any other traditionally medieval shoes. Instead of just a flat medieval sole, we have used a number of layers to build up a more comfortable orthopedic base, including a leather insole, leather fibreboard, a porous orthopedic base, and a rubber outsole. This leaves you with a flat sole on the outside, which looks very medieval, and a comfortable shoe on the inside.

These shoes close at the front with leather lacing, which really gives them the look of modern sneakers. For the main part of the show, we've used a natural leather that is quite strong, but still flexible and not completely rigid. This kind of leather is perfect for embossing and has a nice matte texture. The wolf artwork on these sneakers was designed by our team of in-house artists, who took great joy in researching Viking knotwork and carvings. They are lined with contrasting leather and have been well finished, with strong machine stitching used throughout.

Even though these shoes look modern, remember that they are made of leather and require some extra care! We recommend letting them dry before wearing them again, cleaning mud and dirt off of them after every use, and storing them correctly. For storage, shoe-trees or crumpled newspapers will help keep their shape and making sure they are not being squished by anything else.

We also sell these shoes with a leather strap instead of laces and with knotwork embossing instead of wolves.

Important note about measurements:

Please be accurate taking measurements – that influences very much at our ability to make the item that will suit you perfectly. Also, you should remember that natural leather is soft material and it will stretch so when you are getting your shoes it is normal that it fits very slim. It will conform to the shape of your feet after one or two days of usage.
