Small metal shield for hand-to-hand combat

Not only a convenient everyday carry protection that could be used to deflect blades, buckler is also a quite effective weapon. Just imagine striking someone not protected by armor with a metal edge of a buckler or punching somebody with buckler’s boss. That would… hurt a lot, right?

Bucklers were quite popular in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance period and we have a lot of treaties from the times (starting with a famous Royal Armouries Ms. I.33) that show sword and buckler techniques. And that is for a good reason: bucklers were useful.

There is no clear way to distinguish a buckler from a shield: some say the maximum diameter for a buckler is 16” but certainly there is some “grey zone” and really a buckler is just a small shield with a central grip.

We have made this particular one to stand out from the others by its appearance: a blackened boss with a brass contour around it makes the design special and remarkable. The shape is rather traditional and functional: the steel circle is slightly curved forward and is reinforced by a metal wire, which also makes the edge safer.
