“Morning Star" Enamelled Buckler

Spring steel buckler with brassed shield boss

Are you looking for a second weapon to use in your offhand? Why not try the buckler - even though it looks like a little shield, it actually is a very adaptive weapon that will give you the ability to be more aggressive in your fighting, while also providing some protection for your hand!

Sword and buckler fighting has actually become quite popular is modern HEMA, partially because of the popularity of the early XIV century manuscript Royal Armouries I.33. This manuscript features wonderful images depicting different wards and fighting styles between two civilian fighters, giving us an idea of how this kind of weapon may have been used. Much of the actual instruction in this manuscript, as well as other treaties that still exist, are quite vague, leaving a lot of how to fight with a buckler open to interpretation.

Our buckler is made to be round, the traditional shape of bucklers, with a slightly raised shape that helps you parry and catch blades in the heat of combat. The handle on the back fits comfortably into your hand, and has been finished with a leather wrap to give it more texture and grip. The buckler features premium touches such as a roped edge, a ring at the back to hang it on a belt, and a brassed shield boss for added contrast.

This particular buckler is an absolute work of art. It all started in our design studio, where our in-house artists researched medieval manuscripts and art to come up with the creative lion etching you see encircling the buckler. It was actually forged in our blacksmithing workshop, where tons of expertise and care were applied to make it perfectly constructed and the etching of the lion art meticulously applied. Here it also can be blackened, giving it that rich, darker finish, or brassed for golden shade. Last, it was finished by the jewellery studio, who hand applied the enamel to ensure it has a luxurious, artisanal finish. We have no doubt you’ll be amazed by the beautiful quality of this buckler.
