“Hussar” Polish Saber

Curved Decorative Sword

The Hussars were a very interesting group of people. Not only are they remembered as some of the fiercest fighters and most terrifying foes, but they were also very stylish and cultivated a very refined aesthetic. Their weapons were no different - elegantly curved sabers were a favorite of the Polish Hussars because they were not only beautiful but also incredibly functional in their cavalry units. We always revel in the opportunity to do more research into Eastern European history, and the Hussars have truly captured our imaginations!

Sabers make for excellent cavalry weapons due to the curve of the blade. They lend themselves very well to a cutting motion, and from a horse, these weapons are balanced perfectly to strike down. The aspect of this saber that is undeniably Polish is the thumb ring. The hussar was able to loop his thumb through this ring, which changed how the sword would sit in his hand. He could then use this position to create a unique motion that was quick and deadly on the battlefield.

This saber, however, will not be deadly, for a few reasons - the first being that because it is purely ornamental, it is not sharp. The blades of the actual Hussars would have been sharpened to perfection, ready to slice and chop. The blade of our saber is hollow, and cannot be honed or sharpened, as this weapon is best suited to sitting on a mantelpiece or being posed with in a photoshoot. That being said, it is still made from steel and is quite weighty, so be sure to treat it with respect as swinging it around could still cause damage.

Though it appears quite simple, there are some lovely fine details to this sword. The handle is ergonomically shaped to fit perfectly into your hand, with a comfortable leather grip. The fuller of the blade is etched to create a contrast again the shiny stainless steel on either side. Because this sword is made from stainless steel, it is resistant to rust and moisture, so it will remain shiny as long as you take care of it.
