“Key Keeper” Velvet Hood

14th-century style hood

This beautiful hood was created to match our Key Keeper, Townswoman, and other 14th-century inspired dresses. Made from a lush, rich, velvet, it looks plush and is no doubt the luxurious touch that your costume needs to feel complete. Medieval hoods can be considered an early version of the “hoodie” - before the hood and shirt were connected! Instead of having a hood attached to your tunic, you would wear it as a separate garment that would also cover your shoulders. This means it could be added to your outfit on cool days, and easily taken off when it warms up.

Hoods are an excellent way to layer something additional onto your costume so that it feels like an outfit instead of just a costume. They add some framing around your face, protect your neck, and can also be used as a sun hat! They’re generally an excellent multi-purpose item.

This particular hood is inspired by reality, and the look of it is quite similar to the 14th century “London Hood” historical find. It has buttons in the middle which allow you to open and close it, either buttoning it up tight around your face or leaving some undone to turn out the edge. The buttons are little brass dome-shaped buttons that go into loops. It has a straight edge along the bottom, and a long trailing liripipe at the back that can either be left loose, tucked into your belt, or wrapped around.

This hood is lined with robust cotton to give it some structure, with extra velvet lining around the face at the “turned out” part. Velvet is a wonderful fabric for this kind of accessory because it’s water repellant, luxe, and nice and soft next to your skin. It adds a contrasting texture to your costume that catches the light differently.
