Mail Standard

Practical looking stainless steel Chainmail Gorget

Sometimes called a “chainmail gorget”, the mail standard is a versatile piece of historically inspired armor, dated around the XV century. We feel that it can be used in a number of different costumes to add a little bit of extra neck protection as well as complete an unfinished kit that needs a little something more.

Though this isn’t as fancy looking as the Leather Decorated Mail Standard, this piece still uses the same quality materials and finishing techniques to create a refined piece of armor. All of the mail rings on this standard are made from stainless steel, meaning you won’t have to worry about rust! We have used the standard mail ring pattern of 4:1 for the largest part of the collar, which is what you’ll commonly see on large pieces of mail armor such as shirts. Historically, mail standards would have a tighter weave around the actual neck part, which is why we’ve used a 6:1 weave on the neck, which looks excellent and provides a bit of extra protection due to the denser pattern of rings.

Linen lining around the neck means that none of the rings will rub against your exposed skin, and the small amount of padding the quilted linen provides does also grant a little bit more comfort and protection. We’ve finished off this standard with a strip of leather that edges the top of the linen in a way that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing, with neat, exposed stitching to give it some texture. This gorget closes at the back with a single robust strap with a medieval buckle which have been stitched on.

This armor would have traditionally been worn by a man-at-arms, knight or other heavily armoured combat oriented person. However, we also feel it would look beautiful as the finishing touch on a dress or alongside the leather armor of a ranger.

  • Greg 09 of February 2021:

Can the mail standard include 3 or 4 straps and buckles on the back to close it instead of just one strap and buckle then having to lace the rest of the chain?

    ArmStreet Team:

Yes, it is possible. Please contact our support team to check the extra cost.
