Unicorn Splint Arm Harness

Etched splint arm harness with articulated elbow

This snug-fitting arm harness is as functional as it is beautiful. Flexible, comfortable and visually stunning, this will be an excellent addition to your SCA heavy kit if you’re looking for something a little bit fancier than your average arm harness.

These splinted arms are comfortable and flexible. There are three parts to it: a splint rerebrace, an articulated elbow piece, and a splint bracer. The rerebrace and bracers are made from thick leather with the splints securely riveted on. The elbow and other solid pieces are 1.5mm (16ga) stainless steel, while the splints are 1mm (18ga) stainless. The elbow itself consists of five articulated plates and a rondelle, all attached by solid mild steel rivets. The rondelles on this arm harness are different than our usual – we’ve dished them in a convex pattern to help deflect blows and provide decent coverage of your inner arm. The three pieces of the arm harness are all separate, and can be laced together with cord via holes in all three pieces (although some customers later rivet it together by themselves). The beauty if this harness is that it can be taken apart and worn separately, though.

Every detail on this arm harness is well finished – you won’t find any sharp corners or badly cut splints. The back of the rerebraces and bracers are covered in a luxe suede in your choice of color, to protect you from the back of the rivets. As we’re all about the details, beautiful little cast brass medieval buckles complete the piece.

The etching you see on this harness was carefully crafted by our designer after extensive historical research. Although the design is ArmStreet exclusive, it takes undeniable inspiration from The Hunt for the Unicorn Tapestries, specifically Unicorn in Captivity (1495-1505). We were enchanted by the idea of the unicorn – a fearsome beast prominent in medieval European folklore. They were considered to be just as dangerous as they were beautiful, and hunting them was difficult and had to be done with much care. If the unicorn etching doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry – we also have the option of our traditional floral etching, which is equally as stunning.

While we don’t recommend it, mild (cold-rolled) steel is also available for re-enactment maniacs or those who don’t prefer stainless steel. Keep in mind that stainless steel is much easier to take care of – etched armor maintenance on mild steel is a lot of work.
