Gothic Shoes Poulaines

Long toe suede shoes with side lacing

These suede shoes are remarkable part of our gothic collection. They are made in accordance with an authentic design with amazing craftsmanship. Your medieval or gothic style costume will have finished and admirable look with these shoes.

They are provided with a modern shoe last so nowadays comfort will accompany you at any medieval style event or live action role-playing without any damage to your authentic appearance. The outsole is made of thin rubber and its edge is processed using methods close to ancient which makes it look just like leather one but not as slippery.

Due to the long and narrow Gothic toes, the soles of these shoes are 8.5-10 cm (3.3"-4") longer than your foot length (depending on the size).

Historical reference:

Fashion for pointed shoes (also known as 'poulaines' or 'crakows') began to spread across Europe during XII century and got its apogee in IV century. In no time wearing of long-toed shoes became a privilege of kings, lords, and other noblemen.
Many laws were edited to regulate the length of shoe toes. If you were a peasant your shoes could not be longer than 2 inches past your toes. But the higher was your social status, the longer were toes. Hence for merchants shoe could not be longer than 6 1/2 inches past the toes, for a gentleman - 12 inches, for a nobleman shoes, were allowed to extend 24 inches past the toes. This style of shoes wasn't commonly worn by women. In any case, toes were not as long as in men's shoes.
The poulaines disappeared at the close of the Middle Ages in the second half of the XV century and was replaced by 'cowmouth' or 'bearpow' (shoes with wide round and square toe).
