Fantasy Linen Monk Garb

Monk’s robe, tabard, hood, and bags

A monk is a person who has dedicated themselves to a monastic way of living, devoting their life to spiritual work. Monks can be found in a variety of different religions, and are a common fixture in medieval history and manuscripts. In fact, most manuscripts and early literature were written by monks, who would often spend years of their life perfecting their lettering and marginalia artwork to create the perfect illumination.

This outfit is what we imagine a medieval monk to look like, based on historical drawings and references as well as our own imaginations. This outfit is not a historical replica but instead an ArmStreet-designed reimagining of what a monk might wear. This outfit consists of four parts, all of which can actually be worn on their own and are great generic pieces to add to any garb.

Robe

The robe of our monk outfit is the base piece for the collection and is a simple tunic that comes down to right above the ankles. The robe features a loose fit and long sleeves. There’s lots of room in the shoulders for movement, maybe you be hunched over your desk applying gold leaf to your manuscript for walking through the monastery gardens, tending to the plants.

Tabard

The tabard portion has been made to add a little bit of extra layering, which is what really sells the look of the costume! Adding additional layers is the easiest way to make something look more put-together and cohesive. The tabard is sleeveless and open at the sides and can be laced close with twine which adds a bit of extra texture to the side of the outfit.

Hood

A hood is an excellent addition to any costume. They are a multipurpose, all-weather item that will keep the light drizzle off of your face and also protect you from the sun. Our monk hood drapes over the shoulders giving you a little bit of extra warmth without being too tight of stifling. It fits over your head and can be tightened at the front with a piece of twine.

Bags

The bags for this costume attach to a woven twine belt and are wrapped around your midsection to bring a bit of the shape to the otherwise loose costume. The bags will drape to your sides and have lots of room to hold whatever you’re carrying with you.

All of the items in this collection are finely made with high-quality sewing techniques and premium textiles. We’ve used flax linen for this whole set because it has a wonderful texture to it and is breathable, making it absolutely perfect for something so layered. It has the added bonus of being able to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, making it a very versatile fabric.

  • Paul Smart 02 of September 2019:

Hello, this product looks amazing. I noticed there are two sections of the order form where you can choose the colour. What are the differences between these two sections? Thanks.

    ArmStreet Team:

Dear Paul, the color that you choose for the outfit is applied to all parts of the costume.

  • Dan 16 of June 2019:

Hi, are any other linen colors available currently besides the four listed? I'm leaning towards the natural linen, but I'm curious. Also, is there a maximum height that this can be made for? I'm around 6'3 and I'm wondering if the robe section could be nearly floor length. Thanks!

    ArmStreet Team:

Hello Dan, this costume can be made in any linen color you like. Please simply request in the comment to your order. All linen colors that we have you may check here. The costume will be hemmed according to your full height.

  • kevin lytle 09 of July 2018:

Is there anyway of getting different colors? For instance, a natural robe and black for the remaining parts?

    ArmStreet:

Hi! Yes, sure. Please simply leave this comment to your order at the checkout and we will make it in different colors as requested.

  • Don Hawkins 13 of December 2016:

I would like to buy the Monks Robe, Every ad I see say's the same. Fabric/linen. I want a heavy fabric, I this it. Thank you

    ArmStreet team:

The costume can be made of cotton, it is thicker and keeps its shape better. Though, we cannot guarantee that the look will be the same. The cotton is available in Black, White, Green, Dark Blue, Blue and Burgundy colours, no extra for this.

  • Perry 23 of November 2016:

Is it possible to order this in burgundy or wine colored linen?

    ArmStreet team:

Absolutely, just mention the colour in the comment to your order. :)

  • William 30 of October 2016:

Do you sell the pattern to make the robe and accessories?

    ArmStreet team:

We do not share or sell our patterns, even for non-commercial use, sorry.

  • deebo 15 of May 2016:

do you sell the barrel that is shown in the pic of monk costume?

    ArmStreet team:

Sorry, the barrel is not for sale, it's a part of the photographer's props.

  • Mike Craft 23 of February 2016:

For your Waist measurements, should we instead measure where I actually wear my pants (for me just above hips as I have a large belly) or should I use the waist measurement to ensure that the garment fits around my larger midsection? Thanks

    ArmStreet Team:

Dear Mike, please measure the waist over the belly so we could make the costume perfectly fitting you.

  • Simon Hallewell 30 of September 2015:

Hi, Thanks for the Robe - love it - Is it ok to ironed this or os there someway to remove some heavy wrinkles from fabric?

    ArmStreet team:

Thanks for your feedback! Linen crumples easily, since it's 100% organic. Here are some tips how to reduce wrinkles:

    • Use 40°C (104°F) water for wash in gentle/delicate mode
    • Extraction (spinning) in gentle/delicate mode to simplify the ironing
    • Remove the clothes immediately, when the last spin cycle of the washing machine finishes
    • Do not use hot drying
    • Line or flat drying is recommended
    • Steam ironing is recommended to undo wrinkling

  • David 18 of August 2015:

I'm running a little last second on this, I think, but I'm thinking that this robe in black would be great for my planned plague doctor outfit I'm working on, planning to have ready by the time I head to the MN Rennaissance Festival on Sept 25th. If I provided my measurements and ordered tonight, what's the likelihood it would arrive on time?

    ArmStreet team:

This is doable, we can produce and deliver the Monk's Robe before the 25th of September, you're welcome to order! Please be sure to mention your deadline date in a comment to your order.

  • avalyen 11 of August 2015:

  • Satheian 24 of May 2015:

Hi, would it be possible to order this outfit in a dark green linen?

    ArmStreet team:

Can be made of green linen upon request, simply add a comment to your order. Here is the sample of green flax:

  • chris otsuki 15 of May 2015:

tell me about washing this garment please.

    ArmStreet team:

It's machine washable, use 40°C (104°F) water for wash in gentle mode. To prevent tarnish an alkaline solution or color safe laundry detergent should be used. Extraction (spinning) in delicate mode to simplify the ironing. Please don't use hot drying and do not pre-soak linen clothes.

  • Tom Watkins 26 of November 2014:

I am interested in the Monks robe.....but....is the woven Linen technically called sackclothe?,,,,Also....I am 6'1".....& want it to come to my knees...& I am a bigger man.......Please contact me....I am very interested.

    ArmStreet team:

It seems like woven textiles made of flax are generally described as "linens", and apparel made of coarsely woven fabric is called "sackcloth"..
Can be made for the height 6'1", and knee length, simply add a comment to your order.

  • Kenneth Padgett 18 of August 2014:

Looking at your medieval fantasy monk robe hood costume, and wondering if there is any way you all could have complete and shipped in under 3 weeks? It would be about 4X size. Thanks. KP

    ArmStreet team:

Rush production is possible for some extra, please email us at contact@armstreet.com for more details.

  • Aidon 22 of July 2014:

Can this be ordered made of black or brown wool instead of the linen? If so, what would be the charge to it. Bags made of linen or wool would be fine.

    ArmStreet team:

Can not be made of wool, sorry. The wool that we use is too thick for this costume, it will be as stiff as a board.

  • John Pedersen 01 of July 2014:

Hi, I would like to purchase the monks costume to use for a display in my classroom. I plan on using it on a mannequin that I have not purchased yet would you be able to make a costume based on the measurements of a typical mannequin? I do not need the bags so I was wondering if this would lower the price at all? Thanks.

    ArmStreet team:

Please specify what kind of mannequin you're going to buy (any pictures are welcomed). Costume w/o bags will cost $12 less.

  • Denni 17 of November 2009:

Hi could I see pictures of the robe in blue and grey? thank you

    ArmStreet team:

There is no such picture, the robe can be made in brown, black, natural or white color only.

  • MARTHA 28 of August 2009:

Do you have this on standard sizes to send it right away? And how soon can I get it in Texas? Thanks

    ArmStreet team:

This costume is not available in fixed sizes, sorry.

What color is the robe shown in the picture? Thanks.

    ArmStreet Team:

Hello, it is natural color fabric.

  • Gab 22 of August 2022:

When will this become available again? I really need this

    ArmStreet Team:

Hello, We are located in Ukraine. We are attacked by Russia at the moment and it is difficult to say when the attack will be over so we could get back to work, unfortunately. The very moment it is more or less safe here, we will be more than happy to produce all the products shown on the website. Meanwhile, you are welcome to subscribe to our newsletter if you would like to receive our updates. Thank you for your understanding.

  • John 24 of June 2022:

I am amazed that this beautifully made item was made and sent from a country under attack. Despite me telling them to forget my order and use the funds to help, they sent it anyway. We Brits had our wartime motto, "Keep calm and carry on". The brave Ukrainians are putting that sentiment into action every day. Slava Ukraini.

  • Paymahn Moussavi 17 of November 2021:

Beautiful quality and craftsmanship. I love this monk’s garb!

  • Sam 30 of September 2020:

Absolutely love it! Fits very well and amazing customer service. Would definitely recommend!

  • Chris 19 of September 2020:

Had a bit of an issue with delivery, but that was promptly fixed satisfactorily. The costume itself is so comfortable that I wear it just to relax in! I love it and quite possibly might decide to be buried in it.

  • Evan 13 of May 2019:

I am a very large guy, and when it showed up it fit GREAT! I couldn't be happier. I will probably have the cowl trimmed a bit by a local tailor, but that's a personal preference. Everything else fit (and looked) great.

  • Leopold Guotmann 29 of January 2018:

This item is perfect! I will get so much use out of this item! I am too excited to wear it to some events!

  • Jen 24 of October 2017:

Love it! The pockets on the belt are really convenient. The multiple pieces/separate layers allows you to use the pieces for different costumes or dress heavier or lighter for weather.

  • Egaumer 25 of April 2014:

This is gorgeous! Hand made to my size and beautifully detailed. I can't wait to order my next piece of clothing from here!

  • Thanh Thuy 19 of March 2014:

Took it in brown: Good quality, good fit, perfect!

  • Loid 28 of June 2013:

My husband is very happy with this. The brown is a lovely dark chocolate. Great make and stitching. Lovely soft material. Only 16 calendar days to ship from Ukraine to Australia. Will definitely purchase again. We removed the string on the sides because it was too much string. Will replace with brown shoelaces.

  • Chris 29 of October 2009:

Prompt delivery. Amazing quality. Feels good and feels right. Thank you!

    ArmStreet team:

    Great, thank you!

  • Tim 10 of September 2008:

I ordered this in black to create a Benedictine habit for Renaissance Fairs. It is well constructed and looks very authentic for the middle ages. The web site pictures do not adequately show off the quality of this costume. I'm over 2m tall and weigh less than 90kg too and it was made to my to fit my measurements perfectly!

    ArmStreet team:

Thanks for your great feedback, Tim!

  • Jack Mccoy 19 of January 2001:

I was on role playing game in this costume and im happy to wear it
