    Mongolian Rebated Steel Saber

    (XII – XIII century)

While early and relatively primitive forms of the sabers were introduced in Europe by Hungarians in IX century, in Great Steppe and on its' borders this weapon was continuing to evolve. This example represent its' pre-Mongolian stage of development popular at the time from Ural to the South Principalities of Kiev Russ.

Its' length and relatively light weight making it very maneuverable, yet capable of delivery of very strong blows or cuts. Revers curvature of a tong ensure optimal hand grip in a circular motion and moderate curvature of a blade allowed solid trust.

This was near perfect cavalry weapon, as well as very dangerous in a hands of a foot soldier.

The blade is 30 3/4” long, elongated pentagon in cross-section with 3/5” fuller following the most of the blade length. Last 4” of the blade are asymmetric diamond with false edge.

Cross-guard is relatively large – 5.5” with the ends curved toward the blade. According to A.Kirpichnicov (“Ancient Russian weapon of IX – XIII cc”) this type of guard soulful be classified as “transitional between Type IIA and Type III”.

In early XIII century this weapon could be handled by both Cuman horseman or Russian warrior of any Southern principalities. It would be less popular (but not unusual) in Novgorod, Pskov or Turov.
